Sneak peek of a quilt in progress

I am working on a quilt at the moment. Done the patchwork and applique plus quilting – binding to do. Next I am adding 3D fabric flowers. It’s going to take me a while but I’ll share when it’s finished.

I have used recycled cotton sheets for the patchwork. I added a new fat quarter for cutting the applique. I have had my first play with my Accuquilt cutter and dies. I used 4.5 inch squares, 2.5 and 1.5 inch strip dies for the border. The applique was cut using the Heather Feather dies. So much quicker to cut than with scissors – had the applique all cut in minutes. The lettering was cut on my Brother ScanNCut (built in font) electronic cutting machine.

I quilted using free machining. Some of it freeform and some using quilting rulers (from Alys Stitchy Fingers). It’s my first play with the rulers and they are fab for more controlled/accurate patterns. I also added some decorative machine stitching too.

I used another recycled polycotton sheet for the backing and will be making the flowers from recycled sheets and pillow cases too. Even the wadding is recycled from curtain interlining (I prewashed it to check suitability – some interlinings are too ‘fibrous’ and would shrink unpredictably plus shed fibres etc.).

I love to create something new from recycled stash.

Powertex mixed media canvas

Good afternoon. I have been playing with Powertex and have created another mixed media canvas.

 

Powertex is a fabric hardening medium which can be used in mixed media and for creating 3D sculpture. I have got so many ideas and things to try. I am having so much fun with this medium. I have many more experiments ‘on the go’ including some fossil jewellery, more 3D vessels and canvases – will share soon.

Materials:

Powertex Fabric Hardener (clear)

12 X 12 inch stretched canvas

Recycled cotton scarf and hessian (burlap)

Texture Media (3D Sand & Balls)

Starlight paint (light gold)

Easy Varnish

Powercolor (white, blue)

Fossil themed silicone moulds

Shells, glass beads (light gold), glass glitter (clear)

Letter stamps and StazOn Inkpad (Opaque White)

Recycled bottle decorated using Powertex media

Recycled glass bottle

Potato sacking (burlap/hessian) and kitchen paper

Pebeo Gilding Wax (gold)

Tiered Maxi Skirt made from a recycled bed sheet

 

 

Good afternoon. I am sharing a skirt that I made from an old double bed white sheet. I dyed the background and made up this simple tiered skirt. I simply measured my hips and cut the width of the top tier so that I could pull it on easily with an elasticated top band. I then added tiers of increasing width (approx. 1.5 to 2X the width of the previous tier). I used a remnant of embroidered fabric for the bottom frill.

Before adding the elastic to the waist I machine embroidered rows of decorative stitching and flourishes. I then block printed with various designs and heat set to make permanent. Summer here we come.

Materials:

White cotton double bed sheet, cotton ribbon for trim (dyed with sheet) and remnant of turquoise embroidered chiffon

Dylon multipurpose dye. This is now discontinued but they have a new formulation that is equivalent for use on natural fabrics (dyed in washing machine).

Madiera Rayon embroidery thread – variegated golds and browns

Wooden printing blocks:

Owl (Blockwallah), small leaves, floral sprig, daisy flower, leafy spiral (Colouricious), paisley and floral Border (unknown brand)

High density foam mat – to lay underneath as block print (Colouricious)

Fabric paints – heat set with iron (to make permanent):

White Gold Starlights Fabric Paint (Imagination Crafts), Chestnut Brown Multipurpose Satin Paint (Martha Stewart), Turquoise blue mixed to match fabric – Opaque White (Jacquard), Metallic Turquoise and Blue (Vallejo from Colouricious)

I made this one a while ago but thought that I would share. Can you see what I have used to weave this? It is made from recycled plastic packing strips.
